2017 KTM Adventure motorcycle range revamped – new 1090 and 1290 enduros replace the 1050 and 1190

For 2017, KTM’s Adventure range of big dual-purpose travel enduro machines, both for the road and off-road, has been revamped for the new year. Aside from the range of new Adventure-series motorcycles, the Adventure Rally concept was also presented.

The reorganisation sees the demise of the 1050 Adventure – which we reviewed earlier this year – as well as the 1190 Adventure series. These are replaced with the 1090 Adventure, and three versions of the 1290 Adventure.

KTM has upped the ante with the 1090 Adventure and 1090 Adventure R. Both versions of the “baby” Adventure carry a 1,050 cc V-twin that puts out 125 hp with the 1050 Adventure weighing in at 205 kg and the R at 207 kg.

With more of a road bias, the 1090 Adventure rolls on 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, while the Adventure R 21- and 18-inch hoops front and rear. WP does the suspension work, the base Adventure getting non-adjustable 43 mm forks and rear absorber adjustable for preload and rebound, while the off-road oriented R gets fully adjustable 48 mm forks and rear adjustable PDS absorber.

At the top-of-the-range are the 1290 Super Adventure S and Super Adventure R, both of which have a 1,301 cc V-twin installed that produces 160 hp and 140 Nm of torque. The S version of the 1290 Super Adventure is designed for road touring, while the R model is meant to go anywhere, anytime.
As with the 1090 Adventure bikes, the S model rolls on cast 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, while the R gets 21-inch and 18-inch front and rear spoked wheels, respectively. Weight is 215 kg for the Super Adventure S, and the R weighs in at 217 kg and has semi-active suspension.

Common to Super Adventure models across the range is the orange frame and crash bars for the R version, while the S model gets cast alloy wheels and slightly lower seat height. Brembo does braking for all models, with the 1090 getting Bosch 9M+ ABS, and the 1290 gets 9ME C-ABS.

A new concept of KTM adventure touring concepts was also presented at the Intermot show in Cologne, Germany, called the KTM Adventure Rally. Touted as a series of intense adventure riding events, the programme has already been established in the US, and will be making its way around the globe. - Paultan
